Nights Out in Manchester That Don’t Involve a Dance Floor

6th August 2026

Ask what to do in Manchester at night and you’ll usually get a version of the same answer: a bar in the Northern Quarter, a club until close, maybe cocktails somewhere if the night calls for it. All of it is good, and the city does it well. It’s just that the answer assumes you want to spend the evening standing up with a drink, talking over music.

Plenty of nights don’t suit that. A group where not everyone drinks. An evening that needs to finish before 1am. Friends visiting who’ve already done the Northern Quarter twice. THE CUBE Manchester fills that gap with something loud and sociable that doesn’t need a dancefloor to work.

What the evening actually looks like

You play in teams of two, taking on a series of glass boxes with a countdown clock running and the rest of your group watching from outside. The challenges test balance, speed, memory and judgement, and they’re chosen for you rather than picked. Each one looks manageable from behind the glass, which is exactly the trap.

A session runs around 90 minutes to two hours depending on how busy it is, so it fits an evening without swallowing it whole. That matters if half your group has work in the morning.

The people watching get as much out of it

What makes this work after dark is that the group’s reaction is half the entertainment. A pair goes into the box, the clock starts, and everyone else is immediately invested, shouting advice, laughing and filming the bits that go wrong.

That’s the energy people are usually chasing on a night out, and here it arrives without waiting for the third drink. It’s a night that genuinely works sober, which is worth knowing if you’re planning for a mixed group.

Everything in one building

Food and a fully stocked bar sit in the same venue, so there’s no pre-drinks in one place and a main event in another. THE CUBE Manchester is inside Urban Playground at the Arndale, which also has Putters crazy golf if you want to stretch the evening further.

Sessions scale from a couple of people to much larger groups, with private CUBE spaces available if you want the night to feel like an occasion. Players aged 9 and up are welcome, and under-16s need an adult with them.

Worth knowing before you book

Games are played in groups of four, split into teams of two. If you book as a pair you’ll be matched with another pair on the day, with scores going onto a shared leaderboard.

Booking ahead is sensible, particularly at weekends. Opening hours vary, so check the venue page for the day you’re planning.
